I built this first Audrey II sort of on a whim in March of 2024. The whole process of building it probably only took me a total of 5 days, but there were a lot of firsts in the process.
The design of this Audrey II is heavily based on the movie interpretation, mainly with the textures and colors of the pod itself. I love how colorful and textured the movie Audrey II is.
So the pod itself was created by using a large easter egg as a base for paper mache. I had never done paper mache before! So really the pod itself is a little wonky because of that. Trying to pull paper mache off of a hard plastic surface without tearing it is no easy feat.
To make the pod function as a super simple hand puppet, I just seperated the top and bottom jaws and then re-connected them with a peice of felt in the mouth. There's a space between the pod and the inside foam of the mouth where you can slip your hand in. I even included the little moveable tongue which can be operated with your middle finger!
the pod is seperate from the pot itself and the rest of the puppet is just a sock painted green with leaves attached to cover up the puppeteers arm.
The leaves and vines on the pod are just made out of felt that I painted purple accents onto.
The pot is super self-explanitory its just a plastic flower pot I painted to be terracotta and then added a cardboard ring around the top for the lip of the pot. There's a large chunk cut out of the back of the pot for the puppeteers arm and elbow to sit.
[This picture is me actually puppeteering it]
I used this puppet in my 2024 Halloween costume. I was Seymour of course. She now sits as decoration on top of a bookshelf in my room. Right next to my framed picture of Rick Moranis.
I initially entertained the idea of building a smaller Audrey II but I didn't have any real plans to. UNTIL! I was antique shopping and I found the exact style of coffee tin that they use in the movie... I just couldn't pass up the opportunity...
SO! This smaller Audrey II was built in about 3 days in late August, 2024.
Obviously this Twoey is directly based on the version from the movie. I thought about making this one a puppet, but the mechanics of the whole thing were getting more complicated than I felt like wrapping my head around. I was kind of just in the mood to make a fun little prop I could display on my shelf. So that's what I did!
To build this Audrey II I pretty much just used the same process I used for the larger one. The pod itself is paper mache, using an easter egg as the base. [The smaller easter egg was way easier to pull the paper off of.]
The mouth can open slightly, but doesn't really stay open [or fully closed unfortunately].
The rest of the plant is made using scraps from the larger puppet. The leaves are made from thin craft foam I painted green.
My favorite part though is the stem! It has a thick wire skeleton which allows for posability! For the skin of the stem I used the other sock that I didn't use for the puppet... BUT I really love how it looks on this Twoey because the ribbed texture of the sock adds a lot of nice texture to the stem.
This little Twoey sits on the top of a smaller bookshelf in my room. I get a lot of joy from looking at it.
